The part number is read in several blocks. First there are three blocks with 3 characters each. Then there is (not always) an index at positions 10 and 11, then (also only if necessary) an indicator, for example for color or software versions for control units.

The two left digits of the previous number indicate the respective vehicle type, for example:

It should be noted that all digits can appear in a vehicle. The assignment of the number is part specific. For example, a side part is given the number for the rear shape, parts in the dash panel area are named after the position of the steering wheel, etc. If the third digit is not numerical but alphabetical, a derivative or a model adapted to the market (e.g. Mexico, China) is designated. This term only applies to the car sector. For commercial vehicles, other variants are referred to.

END NUMBER
The left side of the end number is a pure number. When assigning the part number, the same end number is always used for a part with the same name (eg window crank). Odd end numbers identify left parts, even end numbers indicate right parts. Of course, this only applies if the parts are installed accordingly.
INDEX
The right index is assigned to identify different variants of the same part, such as color variants or different software in control units
This can be due to the use of different materials or identical parts.
Exchange parts or remanufactured parts are marked with an X.
Color code
The color code indicates the color of the part if necessary. This is usually the case with cladding or decorative parts, since more than one color is used here (e.g. black, beige, brushed aluminum, carbon, etc.). For example, GRU states that it is a primed part that still needs to be painted.
Standard parts
Standard parts are usually not marked with the part number. The first six digits are purely counting, the last two digits are the index. Standard parts that begin with 9xx.xxx are parts similar to standards, which from a construction point of view cannot be replaced by a real standard part. Standard parts that start with 052.xxx are assigned to greases, oils, etc.
