Audi 2G/3G Shutdown: Audi connect, eCall, myAudi and Update Options

The retirement of 2G and 3G networks may affect connected services in some Audi vehicles. Which features remain available depends on the vehicle’s telematics module, country and mobile operator.

In brief: A telematics module that relies only on 3G may lose connectivity when that network closes. Some 4G modules still require 2G/3G for voice. Software and activation services may offer options for specific functions, but they do not replace a discontinued mobile network or incompatible telematics hardware.

Which Audi vehicles may be affected?

Operators are retiring legacy networks on different schedules in different countries. According to Audi’s assessment for European markets dated 17 June 2026, vehicles built before model year 2025 with a 3G telematics unit, or an early 4G unit that relies on 3G for voice, may be affected. Model year alone is not conclusive: the installed control unit and country of use also matter. The European assessment does not set a shutdown date for every country.

Which features may be affected?

FeaturePossible impact
Audi connect and myAudiLive traffic, vehicle status and remote commands may stop if they require the vehicle’s data connection.
eCall and roadside assistanceAn emergency or assistance call may fail if its voice connection depends on a retired network.
Functions on DemandActivation of new functions and validation of time-limited licences may be affected while the vehicle is offline.
OTA updatesThe vehicle may be unable to receive supported online updates without the necessary data connection.
Bluetooth callingCalls through a paired phone can continue if the phone has its own working mobile connection.

Is a 4G indicator enough?

No. Some units use 4G for data but need 2G/3G for voice or initial network registration. A 4G symbol on the MMI therefore does not prove that an emergency call can connect. The unit’s VoLTE capabilities and the mobile networks available locally must also be considered.

eCall and Audi connect emergency call

Statutory eCall and Audi connect emergency call can respond to similar events, but they are different systems. An emergency call unit dependent on a retired network may stop working when no compatible network remains. A green SOS indicator alone does not guarantee that a call can be transmitted. Ask an authorised Audi channel to confirm emergency-call compatibility using the vehicle’s VIN.

How can VAGupdate help?

1. Function activation for eligible MHI3 vehicles

Certain functions may be activated through a separate procedure in an eligible vehicle. VAGupdate’s Audi MMI MHI3 Full Activation for MLB Evo Cars service covers navigation, voice control, CarPlay and Android Auto activation on compatible MHI3 units. Confirm the software version and vehicle eligibility before ordering. This service does not restore 2G/3G connectivity or repair Audi’s online FOD licensing infrastructure.

2. MMI firmware updates when OTA is unavailable

If a missing vehicle data connection prevents an eligible OTA update, MMI firmware may be installed through another supported method. VAGupdate’s firmware service assesses the VIN and currently installed MMI software version to provide compatible update files. An MMI firmware update does not repair an offline telematics module and does not activate new functions by itself.

3. Adaptation after a telematics module replacement

If the existing module’s hardware cannot support the remaining networks, restoring connectivity may require a compatible replacement telematics module. After installation, component protection removal, online coding or adaptation may be necessary. VAGupdate’s GRP/GeKo one-time login service is an option for these procedures. Confirm the replacement part, required operation and equipment against the VIN first; replacing the module alone does not guarantee that every service will return.

What happens to Functions on Demand licences?

Audi’s assessment says new FOD services may not activate while the vehicle is offline. Time-limited features may be deactivated when their licence expires or after 60 consecutive offline days; valid licences may reactivate when the vehicle reconnects. Lifetime purchases have different conditions. VAGupdate’s Audi activation service should be considered only for the functions listed on its product page and compatible vehicles.

What should you check first?

  1. Record your VIN, model year and current MMI software version.
  2. Identify the affected service: emergency call, Audi connect, FOD, myAudi or OTA updates.
  3. Ask an authorised Audi channel to assess emergency-call and telematics hardware compatibility.
  4. Share the vehicle details with VAGupdate to assess activation, firmware or post-replacement adaptation options.
